Does my roof pond water? Do I need to add a tapered insulation system to my roof? 1/8" per foot or 1/4" per foot slope? Is a tapered insulation system required by code? All good questions.

Positive drainage by way of a tapered insulation system is a must have for any kind of "flat" roofing application. Tapered insulation promotes water runoff to the open perimeters or internal drains, thereby reducing the weight load on the roof structure. Ponding water also has corrosive effects on asphalt based roof systems and single ply systems. Further, all manufactures requires positive drainage as a condition of their warranty coverage.

Our current building code requires a 1/4" per foot slope on all new construction projects, and "positive drainage" on all existing buildings. Positive drainage can be achieved on existing buildings by installing a tapered insulation system, or adding internal drains if feasible.

Eliminate Ponding Water

Why spend the extra money on a tapered insulation system? Because it can probably save your new roof from an early demise.

Building owners and contractors who focus only on the initial cost of tapered insulation are overlooking the long range benefits and savings that such a system provides.

First of all, the inadequate drainage of a flat roof can result in damage that is far more costly than installing tapered insulation in the first place.

Standing water will eventually cause serious damage to any portion of a building, but because the progressive deterioration on a roof is not readily observable, building owners tend to dismiss the fact that water can cause far more destruction than fire or wind. Water damage is seldom covered by insurance or roofing guarantees.
