Have you thought about recycling the tearoff from your next reroofing project?

More and more Property Managers and Owners are going "green" and have committed to environmental sustainability. Skyrocketing raw material costs, higher landfill tipping fees, legislation to restrict disposal of construction materials, and an architectural community that demands the lightest environmental footprint that can be achieved, are leading toward the mainstreaming of post-consumer recycling.

Typical materials that are commonly recycled are EPDM, TPO, and PVC membranes, isocyanurate insulation, gravel ballast, and asphalt shingles. Even with the costs of the additional handling the savings can be substantial.

To learn more about roof materials recycling and the potential cost savings on your next project call your local branch of Service Works, Your Full Service Roofing Contractor.

Sincerely,

Roof Material Recycling - A Greener Way To Go

Recycling of EPDM and roofing materials as a whole reached a significant milestone at the beginning of 2016. Nearly 10,000,000 sq ft of postconsumer EPDM roof membrane have been recycled in the past three years. EPDM is now the leading recycled commercial roof membrane material in North America. In all, approximately 2.5 million pounds of reclaimed EPDM membrane have been diverted from landfills during this time.

This landmark highlights the great progress that has been made since the project was initiated in 2006. At that time, the EPDM Roofing Association (ERA) in conjunction with roofing manufacturers Firestone Building Products and Carlisle SynTec, sought pilot locations and partners for the program. Those contractors and companies assisted in removing, transporting and recycling the material. Recycled material was tested to determine its viability as a recyclable product, either on its own or in combination with other materials. ERA and its members successfully expanded the program with the creation of a Recycling Council, including ERA Affiliate Members. The first two Affiliate members were Nationwide Foam, Inc. (NFI) of Framingham, MA and West Development Group (WDG) of LaGrange, OH.
